Haunted Places
Tennessee is a fascinating state when it comes to ghost and hauntings. The state is
not only home to one of the most
famous ghost stories in American history, The
Bell Witch
, but it's also rich in other famous hauntings and ghost stories. The
Civil War left it's mark on our state with a number of
hauntings that include
battlefields, residences, and churches. Below, you will find a brief description of some
of the more famous hauntings.
The Bell Witch Haunting: Adams, Tennessee, 1817 - 1821
The story of The Bell Witch is a most fascinating
one. For 4 years, John Bell and his family was
haunted and terrified by and unseen force that would
soon come to be known as "Kate" the "Bell's Witch".
Many people outside of the Bell's family would
witness these
strange phenomena, including
President Andrew Jackson, who was a general at that
time. Andrew Jackson is quoted as saying, "
I would
rather take on the entire English Fleet than stay one
night at the Bell House."
In May, 2006, the movie "An American Haunting" was released about the famous Bell
Witch. It's a very interesting movie and factual to the legendary ghost story of The Bell
Witch. Today, you can visit
The Bell Witch Cave in Adams, Tennessee. For more
information you can also visit their official website at
Bell Witch Cave.com.
The Haunting Of Hurricane Mills: Loretta Lynn's Home in Tennessee
In 1967, Lorreta Lynn and her family bought an old
plantation home near Hurricane Mills. Shortly after moving
in, they started experiencing
strange phenomena like
doors opening and closing by themselves, seeing old
women dressed in old fashioned clothes, and civil war
soldiers. Other
strange phenomena they experienced
was the sounds of someone walking on their front porch
and sometimes the sounds of someone walking and
dragging a chain on their porch. Later, after doing some
investigating, they discovered that an old slave pit was under their porch that was used
to discipline slaves. They also discovered that their ranch had been a former
battlefield for the Civil War. Eventually, Loretta tried to make contact with these
ghost
by holding a seance. During this seance, a table across the room moved by itself. On
another occasion, they held another seance and made contact with a
ghost named
Anderson. While questioning Anderson, he became very angry and starting shaking
the table, lifted it up into the air, and slammed it down hard and broke it into. As it turns
out, Anderson was the original owner of her plantation home and was buried on the
property along with numerous confederate soldiers.
Canton Plantation: Franklin, Tennessee
The Canton Plantation has been called the
most
haunted place in Tennessee. On
November 30, 1864, the Battle of Franklin
was fought with over 10,000 soldiers killed,
wounded, or missing. On the property 1481
soldiers lie buried. Visitors to the Canton
Plantation have claimed to witness
strange
phenomena
and sightings of ghost. Some
are believed to be the
ghost of soldiers
buried there and others of former residents and staff. You can take tours of the
famous Canton Plantation and witness these events for yourself. The official website is
Canton.org.

Bijou Theater: Knoxville, Tennessee
The Bijou Theater, built in 1817, was
originally known as the Lamar House, and
the theater was not added until almost 100
years later in 1908. It's been used for many
purposes including a civil war hospital and a
x-rated movie house in the 1960's. Most of
the
ghost that haunt the Bijou Theater are
the ghost of actors and prostitutes that once
inhabited the theater. Colonel William
Sanders, who died in the Lamar House in the Bridal Suite the day after he was
hospitalized there, is the only
ghost with a known identity. The ghosts make their
presence known by making noises and are sometimes seen floating in the theater or
on the stage.
Copper Ridge Baptist Church: Knoxville, Tennessee
During the mid 1990's, people from all over the world
flocked to this small church located just outside Knoxville.
The
phenomenal events of this church became so
famous it was featured on the tv show Unsolved
Mysteries. More than 50,000 people in one year reported
experiencing strange phenomena like lighted crosses
outside the church windows,
apparitions of religious
figures in photos, and reporting seeing angels appearing.
To make matters even more bizarre, many people that showed up with terminal
illnesses and permanent injuries have been healed after entering this small church
and witnessing these events.
