Tennessee is a fascinating state when it comes to ghost and hauntings. The state is not only home to one of the most famous ghost stories in American history, The Bell Witch, but it's also rich in other famous hauntings and ghost stories. The Civil War left it's mark on our state with a number of hauntings that include battlefields, residences, and churches. Below, you will find a brief description of some of the more famous hauntings.
The Bell Witch Haunting: Adams, Tennessee, 1817 - 1821

The story of The Bell Witch is a most fascinating one. For 4 years, John Bell and his family was haunted and terrified by and unseen force that would soon come to be known as "Kate" the "Bell's Witch". Many people outside of the Bell's family would witness these strange phenomena, including President Andrew Jackson, who was a general at that time. Andrew Jackson is quoted as saying, "I would rather take on the entire English Fleet than stay one night at the Bell House."
In May, 2006, the movie "An American Haunting" was released about the famous Bell Witch. It's a very interesting movie and factual to the legendary ghost story of The Bell Witch. The Haunting Of Hurricane Mills: Loretta Lynn's Home in Tennessee

In 1967, Lorreta Lynn and her family bought an old plantation home near Hurricane Mills. Shortly after moving in, they started experiencing strange phenomena like doors opening and closing by themselves, seeing old women dressed in old fashioned clothes, and civil war soldiers. Other strange phenomena they experienced was the sounds of someone walking on their front porch and sometimes the sounds of someone walking and dragging a chain on their porch. Later, after doing some
investigating, they discovered that an old slave pit was under their porch that was used to discipline slaves. They also discovered that their ranch had been a former battlefield for the Civil War. Eventually, Loretta tried to make contact with these ghost by holding a seance. During this seance, a table across the room moved by itself. On another occasion, they held another seance and made contact with a ghost named Anderson. While questioning Anderson, he became very angry and starting shaking the table, lifted it up into the air, and slammed it down hard and broke it into. As it turns out, Anderson was the original owner of her plantation home and was buried on the property along with numerous confederate soldiers.
Canton Plantation: Franklin, Tennessee

The Canton Plantation has been called the most haunted place in Tennessee. On November 30, 1864, the Battle of Franklin was fought with over 10,000 soldiers killed, wounded, or missing. On the property 1481 soldiers lie buried. Visitors to the Canton Plantation have claimed to witness strange phenomena and sightings of ghost. Some are believed to be the ghost of soldiers
buried there and others of former residents and staff. You can take tours of the famous Canton Plantation and witness these events for yourself. The official website is Canton.org.
Bijou Theater: Knoxville, Tennessee

The Bijou Theater, built in 1817, was originally known as the Lamar House, and the theater was not added until almost 100 years later in 1908. It's been used for many purposes including a civil war hospital and a x-rated movie house in the 1960's. Most of the ghost that haunt the Bijou Theater are the ghost of actors and prostitutes that once inhabited the theater. Colonel William
Sanders, who died in the Lamar House in the Bridal Suite the day after he was hospitalized there, is the only ghost with a known identity. The ghosts make their presence known by making noises and are sometimes seen floating in the theater or on the stage.
Copper Ridge Baptist Church: Knoxville, Tennessee

During the mid 1990's, people from all over the world flocked to this small church located just outside Knoxville. The phenomenal events of this church became so famous it was featured on the tv show Unsolved Mysteries. More than 50,000 people in one year reported experiencing strange phenomena like lighted crosses outside the church windows, apparitions of religious figures in photos, and reporting seeing angels appearing.
To make matters even more bizarre, many people that showed up with terminal illnesses and permanent injuries have been healed after entering this small church and witnessing these events.
